O que é o Past Perfect?

Diferentemente do Present Perfect, o Past Perfect não tem relação nenhuma com o passado. É algo que está apenas no passado. Vejamos alguns exemplos:

Sarah went to a party last week. (Sarah foi a uma festa semana passada)

Paul went to the party too but they didn’t see each other. (Paul também foi à festa, mas eles não se viram) Paul went home at 10:30 and Sarah arrived at 11 o’clock. (Paul foi embora as 10:30 e Sarah chegou às 11.) So when Sarah arrived at the party, Paul wasn’t there. He had gone home. (Então quando a Sarah chegou à festa, Paul não estava lá. Ele tinha ido embora.)

Estrutura das frases:

I/we/you/they/he/she/it + had + past participle

Had + I/we/you/they/he/she/it + past participle?

I/we/you/they/he/she/it + had not + past participle

“Sarah arrived at the party” é que vamos chamar aqui de ponto de partida da história. Se quisermos falar sobre qualquer coisa que aconteceu antes disso, devemos usar o past perfect.

Nos exemplos a seguir, o ponto de partida estará em cinza para que você o identifique.

Mais exemplos: When we got home last night, we saw that somebody had broken into the flat. (Quando nós chegamos em casa ontem à noite, vimos que alguém tinha entrado no apartamento.) Kate didn’t want to come to the cinema with us because she had already seen the movie. (Kate não quis vir ao cinema conosco porque ela já tinha visto o filme.) At first, I thought I had done the right thing, but I soon realized that I had made a serious mistake. (No início eu pensei que tinha feito a coisa certa, mas logo percebi que tinha cometido um erro grave.) The man sitting next to me on the plane was very nervous. He hadn’t flown before. (O homem sentado ao meu lado no avião estava muito nervoso. Ele não tinha voado antes.)

Compare as frases a seguir:

Who is that woman? I have never seen her before. I didn’t know who she was. I had never seen her before.

We aren’t hungry.We have just had lunch. We weren’t hungry.We had just had lunch.

The house is dirty.They haven’t cleaned it for weeks. The house was dirty.They hadn’t cleaned it for weeks.

Past Perfect x Past Simple

Compare as frases a seguir: “Was Tom at the party when you arrived?” “No, he had already gone home.” “Was Tom there when you arrived?” “Yes, but he went home soon afterwards.”

Ann wasn’t at home when I phoned. She was in London. Ann had just got home when I phoned. She had been in London.
